Professor Ó Tuama was responsible for the revival of interest in Irish literature in the 70s and 80s and is well known in Ireland and America for his original thinking and accessible approach to literary subjects in Irish. The collection then moves backwards in time to examine in detail the European context of Irish love poetry from the thirteenth century through to the mid-seventeenth century. With this as background Ó Tuama moves forward then to look at the work of Sean Ó Riordain, and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, highlighting the continuity of themes and ending with a close reading of three Irish lyrics by Mairtin Ó Direain, Sean Ó Riordain, and a poem collected by Douglas Hyde from an old woman living in County Roscommon. The final section of the collection draws together various pieces by Ó Tuama on more general themes such as the celebration of place in Irish writing, the influence of Daniel Corkery, and of Synge on the development of Irish literature during the twentieth century. This is an invaluable text for anyone who wishes to understand Ireland's literary heritage.
